
Biji Alam Awards 2025
for Outstanding Malaysian Nature Conservationist.
AWARD ELIGIBLITY
​We are looking for Malaysian mid-career conservationists who work in Peninsular and East Malaysia.
​
We seek to award individual conservationists, rather than their organisations. However the applicant must nominate an organisation/project that is non-profit in purpose to receive the prize money.
​
This award does not provide research grants or scholarships.
​
​

Your work needs to address, in practical ways, the protection and/or restoration of species either directly, or through habitat management using a science based approach.

We are open to diverse approaches that include community engagement, applied research, public education, policy reform, habitat management (both land and water) including innovative approaches eg. facilitating alternative income streams to indigenous communities and adopting technology in conjunction with conventional conservation solutions.
Requirements​

The following are required criteria:

Applicants must be Malaysian citizens and working in Malaysia (East or West)
​

Applicants need to have proven experience and a track record in practical conservation of species.
​

Applicants must be able to demonstrate a sound science based methodology for how they achieve their aims and outcomes. These must be measurable and presented in an empirical way.

Must have a well developed plan on how to use the award money to further their work.
​

Must be able to demonstrate responsible financial management .
​

Must hold a significant leadership position.
​

The applicant shall direct the award to an organisation/project that is non profit as its main purpose.
​

Must be able to communicate effectively in English or Malay, both in speech and writing.
​

Must not be a recipient of a previous Biji Alam Award.
​
Preferences​
​
​Preference will be given to the following:
​

Applicants who are working with a registered entity e.g. an NGO, society or similar organisation.
​

Applicants who have the support of a team or an established network.
​
-
Applicants who have formal academic conservation training.
​
-
Applicants whose organisations are not already connected with international networks or organisations and who may therefore be more in need of funding.

Applicants who are in the middle of their conservation careers.

A dynamic leader carrying out impactful conservation work on biodiversity with inspiring long term vision.​
​

With both solid achievements and future plans worthy of public support.
​

With the resilience to carry out their long term plans.

​Using science based conservation methods.
-
And approaches that inspire and engage a broader audience in conservation work.
​​

Who can communicate their work publicly in compelling ways.
​

Someone who will continue to engage with Biji Alam and be willing to be a mentor for future winners.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
WINNERS' COMMITMENTS
Winners will be required to attend the award ceremony in person (travel expenses paid) and deliver a short, informal video presentation, an acceptance speech and participate in press interviews if selected.

Winners will be expected to continue to engage with Biji Alam in the future and be willing to be a mentor for future winners.
They will be required to submit a short report on how they have used the award funds six months and one year after receiving the money.
