BIJI ALAM AWARDS 2024
At our inaugural Biji Alam Awards ceremony on the 28th November, we were very proud to announce the winners of the 2024 awards.
Congratulations to our first ever winners!

Dr Chong Ju Lian, associate professor of UMT whose life work has been protecting Sunda Pangolins from poaching and extinction.

and

Dr Yap Jo Leen, from Penang, from Langur Project Penang (LPP) a primate conservation enterprise in Penang, Malaysia who specialises in the important field of human wildlife co-existence.

After receiving a trophy of framed Dusun bamboo weave by Lili Naming from Keningau, Sabah, the two deserving winners gave heartfelt speeches and showed films about their work to an appreciative audience of nature lovers, press and conservationists, including judges
Dato’ Dr Dionysius Sharma (former head of WWF Malaysia), and Robert Basiuk (director of Borneo Adventure Tours and co-founder of Batang Ai Conservancy, Sarawak). Our third judge, Dr Rahimatsah Amat (head of Sabah Environment Trust), sadly couldn't join us due to travel delays and was much missed. After the ceremony at the lovely Temu House, guests and winners continued the happy evening getting to know each other over a delicious Sabahan meal.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to this memorable occasion!

ABOUT THE AWARDS
The Biji Alam Awards 2024 consisted of two awards of RM25,000, each enough to make a significant difference to their work.
These Awards recognised mid-career passionate conservationists and leaders from across Malaysian society, people who are pioneering new approaches and little known by the public.

Applications for the 2025 award round will open second quarter .
AWARDEES
Awardees are individuals with proven achievement in Malaysian conservation. They will have already demonstrated an ability to make change on the ground, and will now be on their way to bigger and longer term dreams.

DEFINITION OF CONSERVATION
The definition of conservation used by this Award is broad and include work on threatened species, biodiverse habitats, landscape integrity, and marine, terrestrial or freshwater systems (and the connections between them).

We recognise that there are many different approaches to doing conservation work and we will be open to innovative work that demonstrate the ways conservation is now growing within Malaysian society such as community engagement, applied research, public education, policy reform, habitat management, law enforcement, ecological restoration, improved land-use and the revitalisation of cultures that respect nature.
